FAQ about tarps and nets for trailers and dump trucks
This FAQ answers the most frequently asked questions about bulk transport, the use of nets for dump trucks, roll-off systems, and specialized tarps such as thermal tarps for asphalt. It is aimed at carriers, contractors and fleet managers who wish to transport their materials in a safe, compliant and sustainable way.
In Quebec, as elsewhere in Canada, the transportation of bulk materials is governed by strict regulations designed to prevent load loss and protect other road users. Although requirements may vary slightly from one province to another, the principle remains the same: the load must be fully secured and contained at all times.
The most common requirements are as follows:
- The load must be covered when materials are likely to blow away, disperse, or fall onto the roadway. For this reason, a net or heavy-duty tarp is required when transporting sand, soil, gravel, compost, construction debris, and similar materials.
- The net or tarp must be sufficiently durable and suitable for the type of cargo being transported. Authorities may require equipment specifically designed for dump trucks, offering adequate strength, UV resistance and stability, even at highway speeds.
- The net must completely cover the dump body opening and be securely fastened. A net that is too small, improperly tensioned, or damaged may result in a fine, even if the load appears stable.
- The carrier remains responsible at all times for ensuring the load is fully contained. Even a single piece of debris that escapes may result in a fine or liability for damages.
How Megatex products help you stay compliant
Megatex nets and tarps for dump trucks are designed to meet the real demands of road transport:
- robust and durable materials (Maximesh, Meqamesh, PVC Mesh, Bitumex);
- designs suitable for 10-wheel, 12-wheel and roll-off trucks;
- reinforced seams and reinforcements in friction zones ;
- standard sizes or custom-made for a precise fit.
Choosing the right, durable material also reduces premature wear and tear, minimizes truck downtime and increases long-term profit.
The use of a net on a roll-off system is essential to ensure safe, compliant and efficient transport of bulk materials. Roll-off containers are frequently used for irregular, volatile or heterogeneous loads, which increases the risk of flying debris.
The main reasons for using a net on a roll-off system are as follows:
- Prevent material loss on the road. Light or fragmented materials such as wood, plastic, cardboard, insulation or dust can easily escape from an uncovered container. A roll-off net covers the entire opening, even when the load is uneven.
- Comply with road transport regulatory requirements. Carriers are legally responsible for the complete retention of their loads. The absence of netting or canvas on a roll-off container may result in fines and penalties.
- Stabilize cargo during movement and handling. Container movement during lifting, loading or tipping can destabilize bulk cargo. The net limits splashing and keeps materials inside.
- Reduce the risk to other road users. A single piece of debris can cause an accident or damage a vehicle. The net acts as a safety barrier.
What Megatex roll-off nets have to offer
Megatex roll-off nets are designed for intensive use in real-life conditions
:
- robust materials (Megamesh, PVC polyester);
- longitudinal reinforcements;
- Reinforced ends to protect against rubbing at the corners of the container ;
- eyelets every 10 inches for uniform tension ;
- standard formats available in stock ;
- custom-built to specific requirements.
They represent a reliable solution for securing roll-off containers on construction sites and on the road.
Vinyl tarpaulins, also known as industrial PVC, are among the most durable solutions for protecting containers exposed to weather, transport and intensive use.
Vinyl offers excellent resistance to weather conditions. It’s waterproof and won’t degrade in rain, snow, frost or UV rays, making it ideal for year-round outdoor use.
It’s also a very durable material, offering superior resistance to tearing, abrasion, perforation and repeated use. This makes it a preferred choice for industrial and construction environments.
Thanks to its weight and rigidity, the vinyl tarp stays securely in place during transport, reducing the risk of flying off and improving road safety.
Vinyl is also highly resistant to oils, solvents and chemicals, which is essential for containers carrying industrial scrap or contaminated materials.
Unlike woven fabrics, vinyl is easy to clean and maintain. A simple wash with water removes dirt accumulated on the job site.
Finally, vinyl allows the addition of features such as eyelets, grommets, straps and perimeter reinforcements, facilitating custom design. Although it may represent a slightly higher initial investment, its durability makes it a much more economical option in the long term.
The cost of an asphalt tarp varies according to size and construction. However, this investment is largely offset by the indirect savings it generates.
The right thermal tarp significantly reduces the risk of asphalt arriving at the job site too cold. This helps prevent waste, rejected loads, costly rework, and lost productivity, which can amount to thousands of dollars per season.
On projects of several thousand tonnes, reducing the scrap rate by just a few percentage points is equivalent to saving dozens of tonnes of material, not to mention the associated machinery and manpower.
How Bitumex tarp contributes to these savings
Bitumex tarp is designed to effectively retain asphalt heat, even in cold weather, thanks to its resistance to high temperatures. It keeps the material within the temperature range expected by MTQ practices.
Its sturdiness, combining bar tack stitching and reinforcements in high-stress areas, limits premature tearing and extends the lifespan of the tarp. The custom fit ensures optimal coverage of the truck body, reducing heat loss, unnecessary friction, and contamination.
Bitumex tarp contributes to cleaner, safer transport that complies with MTQ requirements, while maximizing the quality of the material delivered to the worksite.
More reasons to choose Bitumex tarps from Megatex
Our Bitumex tarps are designed to withstand the high temperatures of PG bitumen, typically between 150°C and 170°C, without deforming or contaminating the material.
They offer great strength thanks to bar tack seams and reinforcements positioned in critical areas, reducing the risk of tearing and extending their lifespan.
Each tarp is custom-made to precisely fit the dimensions of the container. This tight fit reduces heat loss, premature wear, and material loss.
Finally, the characteristics of Bitumex tarps meet the requirements and practices expected by the MTQ for the safe and clean transport of hot mixes, while contributing to the quality and performance of the final paving.
At Megatex, we use top-quality Bitumex and our tarps are manufactured to high quality standards to ensure maximum durability.
Choosing a dump truck tarp or a roll-off truck net should never be left to chance. A poorly adapted tarp wears out quickly, can tear during transport, cause load loss, or lead to traffic violations.
To make the right choice, there are three key factors to consider:
- the type of material transported;
- the exact dimensions of the container;
- the finish and reinforcements adapted to your system and site conditions.
What is the best tarp for transporting asphalt with a
dump truck?
→ Bitumex tarp for dump trucks
Bitumex tarps are specifically designed for transporting asphalt and hot bitumen. It is used on tip trucks and dump trucks transporting asphalt.
It helps :
- keep the bitumen warm during transport;
- resist high temperatures and sticky residues.
For transporting asphalt, Bitumex tarp is the recommended choice, period.
What is the best net for transporting gravel, sand or soil?
→ Net for dump trucks – non-cutting materials
For transporting gravel, sand or clean soil, a dump truck base net is generally sufficient.
- Maximesh
Lighter, more economical net. Ideal for standard use with non-cutting materials. Works well for daily transport. - Megamesh
Stronger, more durable netting. Recommended for those who want a longer lifespan or who use their truck intensively.
→ In our field experience, for a truck that runs every day, the Megamesh offers
better long-term performance.
Best net to transport scrap metal?
→ Net for dump truck – sharp materials
Transporting scrap, metal or debris is one of the most demanding uses for a truck net.
The materials are sharp, irregular and arranged in all directions.
In this case, it’s essential to use high-quality netting to avoid premature
tears.
Recommended materials :
- Megamesh
- Mesh PVC
These nets are designed for :
- better resistance to impact;
- limit tear propagation;
- offer superior durability in tough conditions.
→ For metal scrap, a low-end net will always cost more in the long run… because it will need to be replaced.
The wrong size is one of the main causes of premature wear.
Here are the basic rules for a dump truck net or tarp:
- Length of net
→ Length of container + 2.5 feet - Net width
→ Container width – 4 inches
These adjustments allow :
- complete load coverage;
- proper tension;
- optimal operation of the fastening system.
The finish of the tarp or netting must be adapted to the type of truck and the system used.
Roll-Off truck
→ Eyelets every 10 inches on both ends
This finish ensures :
- proper tension distribution;
- secure fastening of the net to the attachment system;
Dump truck
→ One end with eyelets every 12 inches
→ A pass-pole end
This configuration is the most commonly used on dump trucks, as it adapts perfectly to the bar system and ensures efficient closure.
If your tarps or dump truck’s nets always tear in the same place, it’s no accident.
It’s usually caused by :
- friction at the corners of the container;
- metal edges;
- the attachment bar.
→ The solution: add targeted reinforcements.
At Megatex, our standard models come with reinforcements in the most problematic areas. We can also customize your net to suit your needs.
Reinforcements on Roll-Off nets
On our standard Roll-Off nets, both ends are reinforced with Bitumex to protect the net from rubbing at the ends and corners of the container.
Reinforcements on dump truck nets
For dump truck nets, the grommet is reinforced, as it is in constant contact with the bar.
This reinforcement reduces wear, enhances the durability of the fastening system, and significantly extends the lifespan of the net.
An often overlooked but essential element is the type of stitching used to assemble the tarp or netting.
There are two main types of stitching used in the industry: chain stitch and bar-tack stitching.
Chain stitch is like sewing a potato bag. When the thread loosens at one point and is subjected to tension, the stitch can unravel along the entire length of the seam. Once started, degradation can quickly worsen.
The bar-tack, on the other hand, crosses out each seam. This means that even if a stitch is weakened or damaged, the entire seam does not come apart. The tear or wear remains localized and does not spread.
For tarps or dump truck netting subjected to constant vibration, tension and harsh conditions, the bar-tack stitch offers greater safety and superior durability.
At Megatex, all our truck tarps and nets are sewn with bar-tack stitching.
In summary: how to choose the right tarp for your dump truck
The right choice of tarp or net for dump trucks is based on :
- the type of material transported;
- the right dimensions;
- a suitable finish;
- a strong seam;
- and strategic reinforcements when needed.
→ A well-chosen tarp is more durable, safer and costs less in the long run.
